Gamophobia:- fear of marriage
Gamophobia is defined as the fear of
commitment, though it can also be the excessive, persistent, overwhelming and
irrational fear of marriage. It is derived from the combination of the Greek
word ‘gamo’ meaning marriage and ‘phobia’ meaning fear. However, several
experts concur that there is an imperceptible difference between the fear of
marriage and the fear of commitment. An individual may be scared of getting
married but he or she may still remain committed to a single partner for life. It
is considered to be a specific phobia that should not be confused with
Anuptaphobia which is the fear of being or staying single.
Symptoms of Gamophobia:
v Feeling of dread or terror at the thought of marriage
v The person goes to great lengths to avoid the topic. She/he may
experience uncontrollable anxiety that makes it difficult for the person to
function normally.
v The individual understands that such fear is irrational but is
powerless to control it.
v Really bad thoughts, movie stills or negative images are likely.
v Feeling of losing control or going crazy are also experienced by
Gamophobes.
